The eighth installment in the popular Fast and Furious film series garnered an estimated $532.5m (£424.7m) globally over Easter weekend, thus breaking the record for the highest grossing global debut ever, slightly surpassing the $529m (£421.8m) that was garnered by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Did you think of the reasons why that has happened?
1 . The Franchise’s Universal Appeal
Film critic and host of BBC Radio 4's Seriously... podcast, Rhianna Dhillon related the franchise's success to its "universal appeal".
"They're films people of all ages can enjoy, because they have that pure, unadulterated escapism about them, children and adults alike are quite happy to watch things get blown up and smashed up," she said.
2 . Great Marketing
Universal concentrated on Dominic Toretto's betrayal of his crew and defection to the astounding antagonist, Cipher, during their social media promotion of The Fate of the Furious. That fact made people very curious and interested in the film. It must also be noted that the film's first trailer gathered 139m hits in a single day.
3 . Paul Walker's Death
Furious 7 can be considered a memorial to Paul Walker, the late star who passed away due to a car accident that devestated the star's friends and fans. His passing caused a lot of people to tune in to the film in order to pay tribute to his final contribution to the cinematic world. In the eighth film, Paul Walker's character is understandably absent and fans were eager to know how his absence will be handled. Ultimately, Paul Walker received references that were found satisfying.
4 . Vin Diesel and The Rock's Feud
It is highly believed that the rivalry between the two stars is fake and only serves as a publicity stunt, but it appears that the fued is actually real. The Rock took a jab at Vin Diesel on Instagram, criticizing his unprofessional attitude. The two barely appeared in the same scene because of that. A recent rumor also unveils Vin Diesel's frustration regarding the after-credits scene that The Rock and Jason Statham shared, a scene which he wished to be removed. The fued picked the interest of a lot of people and increased the film's success.
5 . Lack of competition at the Box Office
The Fate of the Furious had little competition at the box office after its release and a week later. The only competitors it now has are Going in Style, The Boss Baby and Smurfs: The Lost Village. Beauty and the Beast brought in $1 billion and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is yet to be released.
6 . China
The Chinese opening garnered solely a record $190 million. $17.8 million was added from Mexico, and the UK and Ireland brought in $17 million.
